I am writing today to wish all the fathers out there a Happy Father’s Day. I’m about ready to embark on a trip that probably most parents would say “you’re nuts”. Even though mine may be thinking that, they’ve been nothing but supportive of my 90 day adventure down the entire length of the Mighty Mississippi.
My father was the one who planted the seed in my head that something like this would even be possible. I made the comment as a little kid when we were camping near the river that I would like to canoe the Mississippi. It seemed like such an impossibility as I stood on that bank and watched the awesome force of the current race by. All I’d heard as a kid was how dangerous the river was and how the undertow sucks people down and drowns them. Instead of crushing my desire right there on that bank he just said “You could do it, its possible”. On July 7th I’m going to turn that dream into a reality.
As a father myself now one of the hardest parts of this trip will be not seeing my daughter for over 3 months. People probably wonder how a parent could leave their child for that long. I want my daughter to see what it’s like to live life. Hopefully by example she will chase her own dreams for her life. I want to be that father who supports and encourages her to live her life to the fullest. Whatever that means for her.
So here’s to all the fathers out there who support their kid’s dreams. No matter how crazy they are!
